Stephen’s Progresses To French Open Final

June 11, 2018 by

Sloane Stephens, who’s history in the French Open has never seen her progress further than the fourth round, will finally have a chance at the cup with a game against world number one Simona Halep of Romania.

Stephen displayed an almost perfect game against opponent American Madison Keys, ending the game with a total of 6-4. 6-4, mirroring a similar performance from last year. It was the first all-American semi-final since 2002 played in Paris, and Stephen, who is 10th seeded didn’t let up in her battle against Keys. Keys, on the other hand, slipped up more than once, making a number of unforced errors.

Stephen’s victory means that she will be moving on to the final round, something that the player has never achieved before. In fact, in previous events, Stephens never made it past the fourth round. Her opponent, Halep, is two-time French Open runner-up and current number one player in the women’s division.

Even if Stephens doesn’t emerge victorious, her entrance to a final game is noteworthy on its own. It would be the first time that an American player breaks into the top five of the WTA rankings since 2006, not counting the Williams sisters.

Stephens told reporters that it’s always difficult to play against someone who is from the same country, and who is also a close friend, but that she’s happy to play the games either way. She continued by saying that the French Open is her favourite tournament and that she’s looking forward to the game.
