US Open to Serve Up the Goods
Taking place on August 28 to September 10th, the 2017 Tennis US Open will be the 137th edition of the event – and the fourth and final Grand Slam for the year. The event is played annually in New York, USA.
Stan Wawrinka is the reigning champion in the men’s courts, but has had to withdraw prior to the final event due to a knee injury. Angelique Kerber will be back to defend her title as the reigning women’s champion.
The tournament will be played on 15 DecoTurf hard courts and is run and administered the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The final Grand Slam for the year is made up of men’s and women’s singles and doubles, Under 18’s (girls and boys) as well as wheelchair singles and doubles events. There are also wildcard entries, which include mixed doubles.
The two main show courts that will be played during the 2017 event are the Arthur Ashe Stadium and the New Grandstand. ESPN will once again be broadcasting the event, making the television-broadcasting giant the official broadcaster for 3 of the 4 annual Grand Slam Tennis events.
Money Matters
The total prize money for the 2017 US Tennis Open event will amount to $50.4 million – 3.7% more than last year. This makes the US Tennis Open the highest paying Tennis event of the year, the prize money dwarfing those of other Tennis events played throughout the year.
Noteworthy – 2017
German Alexander Zverev has managed to all but bend Roger Federer to his will and powerful forehand, by beating the 36 year old and 2017 Wimbledon champion, in the Rogers Cup, played recently in Montreal. This has potentially significant implications for this year’s Tennis US Open, with Federer having battled a back injury not for the first time this year.
The injury fist reared its ugly head during the second set of the match against Zverev – with Federer having to change direction all the time in order to compensate for the effect that the injury was having on his form.
It was all downhill from that point onwards, with Federer completely off the mark whenever attempting to serve as a result of not being able to rotate his back or shoulders this way or that. After a while, the 19 time Grand Slam Champion even had trouble just walking around on the Court.
Ironically, Federer is the only player to have defeated the 20 year old German player this year – during a previous match at Halle.
Federer has been the favourite ahead of this year’s Tennis US Open – with less than fifteen recovery days to go, only time will tell whether this will remain true.
