Thiem Views Andy Murray as a Role Model

February 10, 2020 by

Dominic Thiem doesn’t feel that his third Grand Slam final loss is an issue. Despite his defeat, the World No. 4 ATP ranked player feels that he is moving in the right direction.

The Austrian was defeated by Novak Djokovic, current World No. 1, in the thrilling five-set Final for the 2020 Australian Open Tennis Tournament on the 2nd of February. And Thiem has had to settle for the runner-up position twice over the past two years, at the French Open each time.

But he says that he is looking to former World No.1 Andy Murray for inspiration who, after a losing streak spanning four Grand Slam finals between 2008 and 2012, went on to beat Djokovic at the US Open in 2012.

Thiem says that as disappointing as losing so far long in the tournament is, it also serves as a huge motivation to do better and go further in the next big competition. He said that his first two losses, against Rafael Nadal in Paris, were clear and he was much further away from the win then. But he has come very close this time around and he intends to keep going until he gets to No. 1.

To date, Thiem has won 16 ATP Singles titles, with at least one on each surface, clay, grass, and hard. He has also reached three Grand Slam Finals and is the second highest-ranked Austrian player ever, behind Thomas Muster, who retired in 1999.
