Stefanos Tsitsipas pushed back from a set down to defeat Dominic Thiem for the exciting final tiebreak, becoming the youngest victor at the ATP Finals in 18 years. The 21 year old Greek player won 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to claim the most important title of his growing career so far. 26-year-old Thiem, who had managed to edge the first set, eventually fell away during the second and the start of the third before he began to retaliate properly. But Tsitsipas had been prepared, and forced a tiebreak before winning at the O2 Arena.
The player then collapsed to the floor after Thiem put a forehead return into the court for the first match point before the two embraced in a hug at the end of their match, which had lasted two hours and 35 minutes, ending with the Greek kissing his opponent on the shoulder.
Tsitsipas is now the youngest player to claim the title for the season-ending event since Australian Lleyton Hewitt in 2001, and has received winning prize money of over $2 million. Talking about his victory, the player said that it had been a roller coaster throughout, and that holding the trophy was amazing. He added that he did get nervous during a number of points while he played against Thiem, but that he had managed to forget how he felt and was able to build momentum with the tiebreak, which had been really tight.
