US Open Men’s Advancements

August 31, 2018 by

Defending champion and world No 1 Rafael Nadal found no problems dominating the second round of the US Open, with his only warning coming after he allowed the 25-second serving clock expire, although the player denies being at fault.

Nadal won 46 of his total 55 first-serve points, and fought hard against Vasek Popsisil, wearing him down and ending the game at 6-3, 6-4, and 6-2 in the Aurther Ashe Stadium. The serve clocks are new to the scene, making their debut at Flushing Meadows this year, and many have been curious as to whether they would affect Nadal’s game, as the player is well known for taking his time between points.

His only warning came in the final set from the chair umpire due to the 25-second time limit running out. Nadal has maintained that the only reason he paused was because his contender put his hand up and asked to wait.

Andy Murray didn’t see a strong return at this year’s US Open, making it as far as the end of the second round. Murray, who won the event in 2012, was forced to miss much of last year’s season due to a hip injury, but was ultimately eliminated by No 31 seeded Fernando Verdasco at 7-5, 2-6. 6-4. and 6-4. Verdasco will now move on to face 3rd seeded Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 champion. It’s the second time in 15 career meetings that Verdasco has bested Murray.
