Britain Set To Shine in Wimbledon
Despite disappointment at Centre Court among fans as well as players as a result of injuries, Britain seems to be having its cake and eating it at this year’s Wimbledon Grand Slam. It is the first time in all of twenty years that Britain has four players going into the third round of the singles matches.
All eyes were on defending World No. 1 Andy Murray during the second match at Centre Court, as he beat Jamaican-German Dustin Brown – a player known for pulling a rabbit from a hat when least expected – with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Murray described Brown as being a superb athlete and an entertaining guy to watch.
Fellow Brits Johanna Konta, Aljaz Bedene and Heather Watson followed suit, each reigning victorious in their respective contests.
In turn, Roger Federer lashed out heavily at injured players abandoning Court mid-play as a result of injuries, accusing them of turning up for cash whilst knowing full well that they might not be in a position to finish the match. Federer went on to say that this was especially unfair toward fans that had turned up expecting to watch Grand Slam Tennis, and having been treated to everything besides.
A First For Konta
Johanna Konta progressed into the third round for the first time in her career. Konta played a marathon match lasting 3 hours and 10 minutes and eventually managed to outrun – if not out-smart – Donna Vekic, World No. 58 from Croatia.
Vekic proved resilient and did not go down without a struggle, forcing Konta into a fight the likes of which Grand Slam Tennis seldom sees.
Konta will go on to face Maria Sakkari from Greece in the third round.
Watson Happy To Be Rid Of Coaching Teething Problems
Heather Watson expressed definite relief at finally managing to reach a point of satisfaction with her current coaching team – and it definitely shows. Watson got off to a great start by beating Maryna Zanevska from Belgium during the first round. Despite having fallen by the wayside during the first round of last year’s Grand Slam, Watson has proven herself to be a potential dark horse, having famously almost beaten Serena Williams during round 1 in 2015.
Bedene Beat More Than Just Flying Bugs
British No. 4 Aljaz Bedene beat Bosnian Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 – despite having to ward off a swarm of flying ants, firmly securing his place in Round 3.
Boredom On The Home Front
Australian Tennis at this year’s Grand Slam has not been nearly as thrilling an experience as what the Brits are currently enjoying. This after Aussie Bernard Tomic admitted to being in a state of boredom during his dismal 1st round loss against Mischa Zverev from Germany. Doubles champion Rennae Stubbs dubbed Tomic an embarrassment to Australian Tennis.
