Wozniacki Wins Opening Match At St. Petersburg Open

Australian Open champion and new world no. 1, Caroline Wozniacki, has continued on the road victorious by winning her opening match at the St. Petersburg Open. The Danish tennis superstar beat Russia’s Anastasta Potapova 6-0, 6-1.

Potapova is 16 years old and the current world no. 235.

Wozniacki also recently committed to playing in this year’s City Open, set to take place from July 28th up until August 5th in Northwest Washington. This year will be the first year since the tournament became a mixed event open to men and women in 2012, that a world no. 1 in the women’s division has agreed to compete.

Keely O’Brien’s joy knew no bounds at hearing the news of Wozniacki’s proposed participation. O’Brien said during a telephonic interview that having a player like Wozniacki in the tournament was one of the best things that the competition was able to offer.

Up Next: City Open

It will not be the first time that Caroline Wozniacki competes in the City Open. She made her City Open debut back in 2016, falling out during round 16 as a result of an injury.

The world no. 1 has expressed relief at finally having made it to the top; to winning her first Grand Slam title after 42 unsuccessful attempts. 2018 isn’t Wozniacki’s first time being world no. 1, and questions regarding her apparent failure to secure a Grand Slam title have been flying about since 2010.

According to Wozniacki, the best thing about winning her very first Grand Slam title is that the question of when it was finally going to happen would no longer be asked. She said that she supposed that it was only a matter of time before she would be asked about when the second one was going to come around, but that for now, the only thing that mattered was to enjoy the moment of having won her first.

Wozniacki is the first Dane to ever win a Grand Slam singles title.

Serena Williams has offered her heartfelt congratulations via social media, saying that she was very proud of what her friend had achieved. Williams was unable to compete in this year’s Australian Open as a result of not being completely back in the fitness game after giving birth to her first child.
