Thanks to his crushing defeat of Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets at the Australian Open Tennis tournament, Alexander Zverev will be playing his first-ever Grand Slam Semi-Final soon! The German seventh seed beat the three-time Grand Slam winner from Switzerland in four sets in Melbourne, 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-2.
Although Zverev lost the first five games in just 16 minutes, he made a massive comeback, converting five of 13 break-points. As a result, the 22-year old will be facing off against either Austrian Dominic Thiem or Rafael Nadal from Spain in the last four games for the event.
Wawrinka, who won the AU Open in 2014, has now been knocked out at the Quarter-Final stage in three of the past four Grand Slam tournaments he’s taken part in. He had a strong start against Zverev, hurtling through the opening set and winning 16 of 19 points on his serve, but his first-serve percentage was disappointing in the end, coming in at only 32%.
Zverev gave it everything he had in the second, not dropping a single point in five service games and going on to break once to level the score at one set all.
Both players lost their opening service games at the beginning of the third, and then Zverev took the lead, 4-2 up, before serving out the set. He opened up a lead of 4-0 in the fourth, thanks to Wawrinka spraying shots all over the court, and this is the first time he’s gone beyond the fourth round in Melbourne.
