Monday Night NFL: Lions Beat Giants

The Detroit Lions went into their Monday Night Football NFL game as favourites against the New York Giants. That was partly because of the Lions’ 35-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals last week, and partly the result of the Giants’ appalling performance against the Dallas Cowboys last Monday, with the New York team losing 19-3 to their NFC East conference rivals, exposing the weak spots in their offensive line and a non-existent running game.

The bookies got it right; the Detroit side had no trouble putting the Giants down 24-10 in front of a New York crowd last night. It wasn’t a completely one-sided display; in terms of yardage, not much separated the two teams’ totals, and they each recorded a turnover. The Lions were just better at converting fourth downs into big plays, allowing them to outscore the home side.

Lions Lead from First Quarter

The Lions took an early 7-0 lead with a touchdown from Marvin Jones, off a 27-yard pass from quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Giants came back early in the second quarter with a 75-yard drive that lasted eight plays and resulted in Eli Manning lofting a TD pass to Evan Engram to equalise at 7-7.

After the teams traded turnovers, Stafford threw a pass to Eric Ebron that the tight end managed to hang onto for a change, resulting in the Lions’ second TD and a 14-7 lead. A brilliant, just-made-it, 56-yard field goal from Matt Prater sent the Lions into halftime 17-7 ahead.

Giants Unable to Come Back

Manning managed to escape the constant sacking he endured in the first half in the third quarter, finding enough space to make some plays and get the Giants’ offense to the 1-yard line. Two penalties later, however, they settled for a 25-yard field goal from placekicker Aldrick Rosas to take the score to 17-10.

Offensive fumbles kept the hosts stuck on 10 points, however, while a screaming 88-yard punt return TD off Brad Wing’s 60-yard punt by rookie Lions cornerback Jamal Agnew sealed the 24-10 victory for the visitors. With the loss, the Giants are 0-2 in the season, with the Lions 2-0 and at the top of the NFC ladder alongside the Atlanta Falcons.
