Syria Vs. Aus Set to Thrill 

Soccer World Cup qualifiers are notorious for hinging on a divine comedy and for the Socceroos this has recently rung particularly true.  The very small margins make go gets in and who doesn’t a dodgy business.  And dodge you must, if you have any hope of coming out on the other side at all.  For Australia’s Socceroos it’s come down to 18 matches, 12 wins, 2 losses and 4 draws, all culminating in a nerve-wrecking sudden death situation against Syria.

What makes the entire business even more uncool is that failing to qualify will be the first national embarrassment of its kind in 12 years.  Not that any of this has convinced Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou to waver in his tactical ways.  Quite the opposite, in fact, as the man at the strategic helm has announced that there will be no deviating from the beaten path.

The signature 3-2-4-1 formation will remain in force, as will the high-speed style of play.  There aren’t really any injuries threatening to topple the apple cart, with the only absentee as a result of that particular beast being team captain Mile Jedinak.  The Socceroos will also be sans defender Bailey Wright as a result of a suspension.  Apart from these, the good coach has his entire arsenal at his disposal.

Sticking To Your Guns In The Face Of Adversity

Despite the many calls that have rung out for Postecoglou’s head after Australia’s failure to directly qualify last month, he has announced that he will be sticking to his guns and not make any major changes to his approach thus far.

A tactical revamp is definitely not on the table, with Postecoglou citing 20 years of coaching experience as his main reason for doing things the way that he has been.  According to him, it’s what works for the Socceroos.  When questioned on the matter of the formation and his stubborn resolve not to make any amendments to it, he responded by saying that there had been a lot of growth in camp Socceroos as a result of it, and that this would be the way that they would be playing soccer for the foreseeable future.

Some say it’s exactly this unwillingness to adapt a formation that obviously wasn’t working as well as what it was supposed to, that has cost the Socceroos direct qualification.

Socceroos Have Fitness Edge Over Syria

The hope is that the hot and sticky Malaysian conditions won’t hamper the Socceroos’ physical fitness edge too much.  Quite frankly, hot and sticky would be right up Syria’s alley.  Syria, who has never before qualified for the Soccer World Cup, will no doubt be looking to continue their recent streak of beating the odds.
