FIFA Denies Claims Of American Ref Taking Shirt

June 25, 2018 by

FIFA recently issued a statement explaining that the rumours of Mark Geiger, an American referee, took a player’s jersey during a match between Morocco and Portugal.

Portugal won the match thanks to a single goal scored by Christiano Ronaldo. Once the match was completed, Noureddine Amrabat, a winger for Morocco, came forth to accuse Geiger of asking for Ronaldo’s shirt during half time. Amrabat explained that he heard of what happened via defender for Portugal, Pepe.

Amrabat was understandably upset over the alleged news, as he believes it was in violation of FIFA’s rules. FIFA, on the other hand, believes that no rules were broken, and that Geiger was within his rights. He told reporters that the American ref acted professionally throughout the entirety of the match, and that the claims of him taking the shirt were unfounded. They went on to explain that they condemn any allegations put forth that don’t have any proof.

Some believe that Amrabat was simply upset that his team lost the match, and that he was looking for a way to undermine the ref. Morocco has not performed well in the last two World Cups, having been taken out completely in the previous one. Many of the players are frustrated, and FIFA believes that Amrabat may have been looking for an excuse to possibly have the referee’s judgements put into question, subsequently forcing FIFA to change the final score of the game.
