England’s planned game against France has been cancelled due to Typhoon Hagibis, but organisers of the Rugby World Cup hope that Scotland’s game against Japan will continue as planned. The typhoon, which has been described as the biggest of the year, is set to cause extreme damage to the country and surrounding areas in the next few days. Ireland’s game with Samoa, which will be played in Fukuoka, is expected to go ahead as planned.
Tournament directed Alan Gilpin stated that the decision to cancel matches was not taken lately, and that it had been made with the interest of the safety of the teams, public, and tournament volunteers, based on advice from weather experts. The Pool B match that was to see New Zealand face Italy in Toyota has also been cancelled, meaning that Italy has lost their outside chance of qualifying.
If the Scotland-Japan game is to be cancelled, Gregor Townsend’s side is most likely to be taken out of the World Cup as per tournament rules. Cancelled matches see both teams awarded two points, which is part of a 0-0 draw. It also means that England will progress as the winners of Pool C ahead of France, who take second place, and will face a probable quarterfinal gains Australia. Wales is expected to take the lead of Pool D, and will therefore be facing France. France would have the advantage over Wales thanks to a two-week break in total.
