NSW Rugby Union Redundancies Bashed By CNRU

July 8, 2020 by

Planned New South Wales Rugby Union redundancies could very well hit the competition where it’s most vulnerable: at grassroots level. This according to an opinion recently voiced by Central North Rugby Union following NSW’s controversial decision to restructure the organisation. A process including the making redundant of at least 12 development officers and nearly a quarter of its general staff force was a short while ago announced as officially underway. If the proposed redundancies were to proceed as planned, then the organisation will have between this year April and the present, cut its staff force by an incredible 70%.

But without the cuts, or at least so says chief executive Paul Doorn, the organisation’s future cannot be guaranteed. Even though the company had started out the year in a solid and even strong financial position, said Doorn, recent events have caused major losses in revenue and funding. Some of the funds no longer available to the organisation include those previously pledged by Rugby Australia and the NSW Waratahs.

The decisions being made now will have a disastrous impact on future younger players, says Central North Rugby Union President Tony Byrnes. Byrnes also expressed the heartfelt hope that the decision would be retracted before the next staff-keeper deadline later on this year in September.

Retaining experienced staff, said Byrnes during his recent address, remains a number one priority in NSW Rugby’s books. It’s a big part of what it ultimately means to support the game from the “beach to the bush”, declared Byrnes.
