The NFL team formerly known as the Redskins will be holding on to its famous colour-combination of burgundy and gold, but not to its infamous former name. The team has announced that it will for the remainder of the 2020 season go by the name the “Washington Football Team”. This, said the team, will afford to it sufficient time to choose a new name not guilty of racial slurs. The Indian head that previously appeared on the team’s official logo has also been dropped.
The man tasked with overseeing the process involving the smooth incorporation of the new name, executive vice-president and chief marketing officer Terry Bateman, has referred to the temporary new name and design as being a poignant link between the history of the team and its future.
Adopting a temporary new name is very much an “organic” kind of move, said Bateman. Organic in the sense of the team now being in a position to figure out what the best possible approach is going to be – not only for the team itself, but also for the community and for the fans. Being fully inclusive and respectful, said Bateman, along with being thoughtful and mindful, are all part of what the team now has more than sufficient time to achieve. “Doing it right”, concluded Bateman, requires time.
As far as the process of removing the old name and logo from all buildings and material and signage at the team’s headquarters in Virginia goes, Bateman has said he expects the process to be completed by at least the beginning of the season.
