Wallabies coach Dave Rennie is fuming at the nostrils over New Zealand Rugby’s controversial decision not to send the All Blacks to Perth effectively pulled the plug on the Bledisloe Cup.
The fixture has now been dumped into absolute chaos, and is according to Rugby Australia, the result of a “unilateral” decision. Also canned are two tests between the Black Ferns and the Wallaroos, as well as two NZ home tests between the All Blacks and the Springboks.
According to Rugby Australia big boss Andy Marinos, what has made the entire situation only all the more infuriating is that the organisation learnt of the news via the media – and despite ongoing negotiations between Australia and New Zealand.
Dave Rennie’s fury is understandable considering how the Wallabies have gone the extra mile in order to accommodate the All Blacks in recent months. Rennie said New Zealand Rugby’s failure to fully honour its commitments is disappointing but not surprising.
New Zealand Rugby CEO Mark Robinson has in the meantime explained that the organisation isn’t willing to send a team to Perth given all the uncertainty about a fresh new outbreak – not to mention the scheduling and travelling that will have to be done in order to pull off a successful Bledisloe Cup.
Robinson also denied RA’s statement regarding the decision having been a unilateral one. He defended the decision to withdraw on Friday, saying communication had been ongoing between New Zealand Rugby, Sanzaar and Rugby Australia.
