Le Romain Kris Lees’ Hope For Memsie Stakes
Six-time premier Newcastle trainer Kris Lees has officially set his sights on Memsie Stakes – declaring that the fact that this year’s prize money had been doubled to $1m certainly helped as far as motivation went. The star athlete competing? None other than triple Group 1 winner Le Romain. On their way to Melbourne, they plan on making a stop at Randwick for the G2 Missile Stakes. Lees said that despite some work having to be done yet by Le Romain in terms of overall fitness, the horse was already in top form. Le Romain, now 4 years old, won the Randwick Guineas at age 3.
Being a slightly older 4 years of age certainly agrees with Le Romain as well – having won the Cantala Stakes at Flemington last year as well as the Canterbury Stakes in Sydney. Le Romain seemed to be cruising casually around the track during the qualifying round for Memsie at his home track in Newcastle. Lees said that this confirmed his decision to head for Memsie as being the right one.
Lankan Rupee To Run At Memsie Despite Challenges
Trainer Mick Price made a surprise announcement on Tuesday that Lankan Rupee would more than likely also be competing at Memsie Stakes in September. The eight year old once reigned as fastest horse in the world, but sadly hasn’t run a race since last November. Price conceded that the sprinter was in dire need of getting his speed pants back on, but that the eight year old was renowned for having loads of stamina in reserve.
Price went on to say that a conditioning line-up awaited Lankan Rupee on his road to Memsie Stakes – with the horse competing in Bletchingly in two weeks’ time and after that for the very first time in P.B. Lawrence.
Lankan Rupee may be an unlikely contender at this stage but certainly has what it takes to cash in big time on the element of surprise.
Price also has high hopes for a newbie in his stables – Ardrossan from New Zealand. Price reckoned that Ardrossan might very well turn out to be a Caulfield Guineas horse, and mentioned that he was looking forward to getting him off to a good start.
Memsie Stakes is held at Caulfield annually over a distance of 1400m, with horses typically using the race as a warm-up for the Makybe Diva Stakes.
The total prize money up for grabs in 2017 is a very cool $1m.
