The former British Cycling and Team Sky doctor accused of having ordered performance enhancing testosterone in a recent controversial ruling by a Medical Practitioners Tribunal, claims he’s not once in his career even considered doping a cyclist.
Despite Richard Freeman having pled guilty to 18 of the 22 charges brought against him by the tribunal, all of which relate to the ordering of a batch of Testogel to British Cycling headquarters in 2011, he has continued to insist that the charge relating to the use of the banned substance wasn’t applicable to his activities.
The accusation is just one more massive blow to the reputation of the country’s flagship Olympic sport.
The tribunal on Friday ruled that Dr Freedman had ordered the banned substance while knowing full well its ultimate application, and that his insistence regarding his innocence had been a blatant showing of dishonesty. Freedman is deemed incapable of providing an innocent explanation, ruled the tribunal late last week.
Freedman has in the meantime claimed that he had been “bullied” into ordering the banned performance enhancing substance, and that the testosterone had been purchased for treating former performance director Shane Sutton’s erectile dysfunction. Sutton, a native of Australia, has vehemently denied the accusation, accusing Freedman of being an individual without a backbone.
The Australian left British Cycling in 2016 after accusations of sexism and derogatory comments against women.
Freedman continues to insist on his own innocence, commenting on the tribunal’s ruling by claiming that he has yet to be presented with any actual evidence of who the doped rider was supposed to have been.
