The unstoppable Dame Sarah Storey has proven her worth for British cycling once again. Storey on Sept. 2 beat exceptionally treacherous conditions on the foothills of Mount Fuji as she made her way to a record 17th Paralympic gold medal – a medal that makes of her the undisputed champion of British cycling champions and the most celebrated English Paralympian in the history of the sport.
The 43-year-old crossed the finish line of the women’s C4-5 road race in a stunning time of 2:21 on Tuesday – with her teammate, Crystal Lane-Wright, making her way to the silver.
Aside from cycling, Storey is by far the most celebrated athlete in all of British Paralympic history. After making her Paralympic debut for Great Britain at the age of only 14 in Barcelona, she would go on to win five gold medals in swimming before finally making the switch to cycling in 2008. Since then, she’s gone on to claim nine gold medals spanning Beijing, London, Rio, and this year, Tokyo.
The men’s race, which commenced shortly afterwards on Tuesday, very much reflected a mirror image of the women’s event. Brit Benjamin Watson claimed the gold, followed by fellow-countryman Finlay Graham in second place for the silver.
As for Storey, the unbeatable Paralympian will now be making her way home to the UK with the hope of being back in time to greet her son Charlie as he returns from his first day of school on Friday. And as for the next big thing for the champion Paralympian, there’s always Paris 2024.
