Horse Racing Heats Up In November
This week sees plenty of horse racing action for Aussie punters.
Sandown Classic – 18 November
The Sandown Classic (also known as the Zipping Classic) is a Group 2 weight for age race run over a distance of 2400m. This year’s final field of 8 have been announced and include names like Almandin, Big Duke and So Si Bon. So Si Bon placed 4th in 2016.
Sandown Guineas – 18 November
The Group 2 Sandown Guineas is open to three year olds and is run over 1600m. Tony McEvoy trained Vinland is a race favourite this year, despite earlier fitness qualms. Despite earlier concerns, McEvoy is confident that the colt has what it takes to compete at Sandown level.
Sandown Stakes – 18 November
Last year’s runner-up, Swacadelic, is poised and ready to go one better during this year’s Sandown Stakes, on November 18th. Last year he was only beaten by a head so it’s not far-fetched to expect that this will be the year for Swacadelic.
Eclipse Stakes – 18 November
The Eclipse Stakes, also run at Sandown, is run over a distance of 1800m and is a Group 3 thoroughbred horse race. The nominations have been set, with Balf’s Choice, Dodging Bullets, Foundation and Jacquinot Bay all in for a start.
Kevin Heffernan Stakes – 18 November
The Kevin Heffernan Stakes is a Group 3 race for thoroughbreds and is run over 1300m. Past winners include Lucky Hussler (2016), Famous Seamus (2015) and the legendary Lankan Rupee (2013).
Summoned Stakes – 18 November
Run under set weights with penalty conditions for mares four years old and up, the Summoned Stakes is run over a distance of 1500m. The weighted conditions level the field slightly, giving the more talented mares an advantage. Silent Sendition reigned victorious in 2016.
WA Champion Fillies Stakes – 18 November
Owner Bob Peters has confirmed that the unbeaten filly Mikimoto is a confirmed competitor in this year’s WA Champion Fillies Stakes. The WA Champion Fillies Stakes is a Group 3 race run over a distance of 1600m. Perfect Jewel and Showcase will also be starting for Peters.
Colonel Reeves Stakes – 18 November
Albany sprinter Dream Lifter has been nominated for the quality handicap Colonel Reeves Stakes. Run over a distance of 1100m at Ascot racecourse in Perth, the Colonel Reeves Stakes was won by Vega Magic in 2016.
RJ Peters Stakes – 18 November
The RJ Peters Stakes is a Group 3 quality handicap race run over a distance of 1500 metres. Classy mare Ellicazoom will more than likely compete in this year’s race and is certainly worth keeping an eye on.
