A Look at Upcoming Horse Races

There is plenty of action for horse racing fans coming up in the next few weeks.

Bendigo Cup – 1 November

The chase is on to secure a start in this year’s Melbourne Cup, and the Bendigo Cup is a potential portal towards just that for Qewy and Foundry.  Qewy is currently 22nd and is almost assured of a Melbourne Cup spot.  Foundry is still very much on the outskirts in 29th position.

The Bendigo Cup is a Group 3 race and is run over 2400 metres.

AAMI Victoria Derby – 4 November

Two of this year’s AAMI Victoria Derby race favourites have fallen out of the runnings.  Cliff’s Edge and Royal Symphony will not be competing this year.  Royal Symphony is said to have returned battered and bruised from competing in the Cox Plate and Cliff’s Edge was edged to the inside during the same race by Damien Oliver’s Happy Clapper.

Cantala Stakes – 4 November

The Cantala Stakes is a handicap race for all of the top milers.  The race is run over 1600 metres at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.  An interesting fact about the Cantala Stakes is that it has proven itself to be a race where all bets are off.  Favourites have won the race only a mere 4 times since 2000.

Coolmore Stud Stakes – 4 November

A high class group of three year olds are assembling for this year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes and running an inside gate will be crucial to any horse wanting to outrun the field.

Myer Classic – 4 November

Tony McEvoy’s Cool Passion might just be the antidote that’s needed to off-set the Royal Symphony disappointment at this year’s Myer Classic.  The Myer Classic is a weight for age race for fillies and mares and is run over 1600 metres.  Cool Passion has won 9 out of a total of 19 starts.

Wakeful Stakes – 4 November

The Wakeful Stakes is run over 2000 metres and is one of the more challenging races run on race day at Flemington.  The Wakeful Stakes is the main lead in to the Crown Oaks.

Salinger Stakes – 4 November

The Salinger Stakes is open to horses aged three years and up and generally serves as a lead up to the Group 1 Darley Classic.  The distance run is 1200 metres.

Carbine Club Stakes – 4 November

All eyes will be on Mick Price’s three colts, Mactier, Lord Sundowner and Octabello at Saturday’s Carbine Club Stakes.  Of the three, Octabello is the favourite to perform.

The Lexus Stakes – 4 November

Nine Melbourne Cup hopefuls will be tearing down the field hoping to keep the dream alive at this year’s Lexus Stakes.  A record 12 international horses could end up making up half of the Melbourne Cup, with the Lexus Stakes and the Bendigo Cup the only two events standing in their way.

Begonia Belle Stakes – 4 November

The Group 3 Begonia Belle Stakes is run over 1100 metres and is open exclusively to mares only, aged four and upwards.  Recent winners include Pittsburgh Flyer and Vain Queen.
