Newmarket Handicap At Flemington

Newmarket Handicap – Saturday, March 10th

Saturday, March 10th, will see a total of 15 runners facing the starter as they battle it out to determine who the winner will be of the annual 1200m Newmarket Handicap. The race will, as per usual be run at Flemington racecourse.

As far as the favourites and barrier positions go, this year it will be Merchant Navy starting from barrier four, whilst Brave Smash will be jumping from barrier number two. The last six participants in straight-course races at Flemington, have started from barriers 6, 7 and 10. Something that is definitely worth keeping in mind.

To that end, other horses worth watching may very well be Redkirk Warrior and Regan Bayliss, who have drawn the far wide alleys. Former stablemates Missrock and So Si Bon have, interesting enough, drawn alongside each other in barriers numbers 11 and 12. These will make an interesting bet for many, do doubt! Quite a bit of room for the exotic.

So Si Bon will be making his official debut for team Lindsay Park.

All Eyes On Japanese Import Brave Smash

Brave Smash is a firm favourite for the win in Saturday’s race. The Weir-trained Brave Smash is an import from Japan and came in third place at last year’s Everest. It must be said that he is only just beginning to find his feet in Australia and the powers in charge of his itinerary initially thought the Newmarket Handicap to be a matter of over-reaching for a horse like Brave Smash, who was still very much an immerging force.

Redkirk Warrior and Brave Smash will be the only two horses carrying in excess of 52.5kg in Saturday’s race. The rest of the 15-horse gang will be carrying lighter weights.

Fillies Booker and Catchy will be getting away on the minimum 50kg. Most of the horses running in Saturday’s race have tasted the sweet of the win on a straight track. It’s only Rock Magic, So Si Bon and Lucky Liberty who are currently still excluded from this group.

Brave Smash and Thronum will be running their very first straight-track races ever. Fastnet Tempest is also in this group, with the only difference being that Fastnet Tempest has run at Flemington before.

Brave Smash and Thronum will each be making their maiden appearance at Flemington racecourse during Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap. The total prize money up for grabs on Saturday is $1.25 million.
