It’s been a mixed bag of highs and lows for the FEI World Equestrian Games that are being held in North Carolina. Among some of the best performances that Games have ever seen, there have also been numerous delays and cancellations due to Hurricane Florence, but for now the event will continue as much as possible.
The Games have seen action in four different disciplines, namely dressage, eventing, reining, and endurance. For the reining event, which is a western-style competition that sees horses being guided through a series of spins, stops, and circles, the United States have claimed the title. Belgium’s Bernard Fonck won individual gold.
Endurance, on the other hand, was fraught with chaos due to the intense weather and other issues that has been plaguing the event. There have been numerous restarts and cancellations throughout, and many athletes and officials have expressed their frustrations, while many critics have called the event a “fiasco/” The world governing body for equestrian sports has stated that they will begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the problems that endurance events have been facing.
The dressage freestyle event has also been met with cancellation, mainly due to worsening weather. Medals were nonetheless given out prior in the Team championship and Individual Grand Prix Special. Great Britain claimed two bronze, while Germany earned one gold, with silver going to Laura Graves and Verdades of the United States.
