Chiefs Thump Patriots in Opening NFL Game
Going into the 2017-18 NFL regular season, the New England Patriots are at the top of the outright futures betting to take their sixth Super Bowl title next February. Betting sites were also offering the two-year reigning champions at $0.30 to win the season’s opening game at home against the $3.20 Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.
In fact, some American football pundits were telling betting fans that the Patriots were unlikely to lose a game this season, citing only the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC, and the Packers, Falcons, Seahawks and Cowboys in the NFC, as potential threats. Chiefs back Kareem Hunt has a great debut, creating one touchdown and gaining 148 yards from just 17 carries. With their star quarterback, Tom Brady, failing to spark, the Patriots conceded their highest number of points since 2000.
Hurricane Irma Causes Florida Postponement
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were supposed to be packed with 15 more NFL opening games, but due to the increasing ferocity of Hurricane Irma, expected to hit Florida this weekend, the Miami Dolphins vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers clash has fallen off the schedule. The game has been postponed until Sunday, 19 November, which was originally scheduled as both teams’ bye week.
This means neither team will get a bye in the middle of the season, so they are in for an exhausting 16 weeks. It also means the Dolphins will play away for their first three games of the season, only returning to Miami to play the Tennessee Titans on 08 October.
Houston Bouncing Back after Hurricane Harvey
After the 2017 Governor’s Cup, the annual clash between Texan rivals the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans scheduled for 31 August, had to be cancelled when Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston, there was talk earlier this week that Houston’s opening match against the Jacksonville Jaguars would also have to be postponed or moved.
However, although parts of the Texas capital remain under water, it appears the NRG Stadium is serviceable and ready to host Saturday’s game. Texans defensive end J.J. Watt’s flood-relief fund had already topped $27-million by Wednesday afternoon, and no doubt Houston’s never-say-die attitude towards Saturday’s game will keep the pledges coming in.
