Australian teams participating in Super Rugby have had one of the worst seasons yet, and it recently got worse thanks to a loss for the Reds against the Sunwolves. This was continued by a loss for the Waratahs versus the Crusaders, and a game involving the Rebels and the Brumbies saw one of the lowest attendance records ever.
The Waratahs have taken the loss the hardest after losing a game in which they the biggest lead of the entire season. Coach Daryl Gibson told reporters his disdain for the inaction taken against Crusader prop Joe Moody, who managed to take out Waratahs centre Kurtley Beale during a lead up to the first try for the team.
“A couple of decisions proved really costly – obviously the Joe Moody incident with the elbow, which the referees missed. In my book, it’s an elbow to the head, so I’m sure powers that be are looking at that,” Gibson told reporters.
“That’s an elbow to the throat of a player unprotected. It’s a red-card offence. The try should not be scored. The guy should not be on the field,” stated Rod Kafer, a former Wallaby player who now works as a Fox Sports analyst.
Stephen Hoiles, a former Wallaby player, told reporters that he was growing tired of their Kiwi rivals constantly pushing the limits of the rules.
“The reality is, we’ve got to start cheating better,” Hoiles said. “That’s what we Aussies need to do. We need to start running players off the ball.”
