Broncos Enjoy Playing at Home

Friday saw the Brisbane Broncos take on the Penrith Panthers at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, in what was a nail-biting affair.  The Broncos where playing on home soil and where no doubt spurred on by a crowd almost exclusively on their side.  However, it is Penrith who where heading into the fight fresh off the win against Manly.

The situation is quite different for the Broncos, having recently witnessed their entire defence falling over their own feet in a sluggish attempt to not appear too afraid of a physical confrontation with the Roosters.  This despite Wayne Bennett’s most valiant efforts to whip them into shape at pre-match training camp.

Let us not lose sight of the fact that the Broncos do not exactly qualify as an accurate comparison device as far as quality of play goes – these are after all the same men who missed all of 19 tackles during the fight against the Roosters.

No opinion would be completely fair or complete without making mention of the previous meet between the Broncos and the Panthers.  Round 9 at Suncorp Stadium saw the Broncos unleashing the full force of their determination on the Panthers, with the Broncos at one point having raced full-speed to a 28-0 lead.

The Panthers made quick work of trying to play catch-up, failing to do so by a 14 point margin by the end of the match.  The final score: 32-18.  Certainly not a poor attempt at making up for lost ground on the part of Penrith – not by any measure.

Whilst we’re dwelling on the past, let’s not forget about the 2003 fourth qualifying final match – when the Panthers really stuck it to the Broncos by managing a 28-18 victory after having trailed behind Brisbane by 18 points at half time.

Josh McGuire certainly made an impression during the previous battle against Penrith – having managed a 170m run coupled with a very physical 44-tackle performance.  This from a man who had recently switched positions from front-row to lock.

However, it would be a costly mistake to lose sight of Trent Merrin’s movements.  The same standoff saw him clearing all of 142m as well as scoring a try and working a line-break. Playing at home is always a pleasure and once again, it looks set to bring the home ground advantage into question. For anyone wanting to be ton NRL games still to come.
