Buildcorp Announces Return To Sponsorship

Yet another milestone in the world of women’s rugby in Australia: Buildcorp has announced its return as main sponsor for the inaugural Super W competition. The announcement was made a mere week after Fox Sports revealed that they would be broadcasting every Super W match on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Nine months ago, the family-owned Sydney construction firm pulled their sponsorship of the National Rugby Championship over gender-inclusion issues. Owner Josephine Sukkar said that Super W would mean that woman, like their male counterparts, would not have the opportunity to reach the pinnacle of what was possible by representing the Wallaroos, something that is obviously very much in line with the culture of the sponsor.

A Culture That Is Rooted In Gender Equality

Sukkar said that Buildcorp’s sponsorship of the last 27 years has always been, and would always be, rooted in the support of club rugby and that the extension of the sponsorship in the women’s game was targeted at connecting club and national levels.

Sukkar also said that this ensured that, much like Buildcorp’s own core values, Australian Rugby would eventually evolve to the point of becoming structured to provide the exact same opportunities to women as what it did to men.

Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle commended Buildcorp on their decision, saying that Josephine and Tony Sukkar had been strong supporters of women’s rugby over many years and that their ongoing support and absolute commitment towards expanding the women’s game was inspiring and very exciting. The ultimate aim and motivation behind the expansion is to create a stronger national team heading into the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup cycle.

A Long Way To Go Yet

The sponsorship announcement certainly is a magnificent boost for women’s rugby, but it remains a grave concern that players will still not be paid for competing, what with the competition remaining a semi-professional one.

Players will however not pay for any expenses associated with the competition and will be covered by sponsored insurance.

The Buildcorp Super W commences on 10 March in Brisbane when Queensland women will play host to NSW women as a pre-cursor to the Red’s going up against the Bulls at the Suncorp Stadium. The competition will consist of five-team format played over five weeks, with the final played between the eventual top two teams.

Super W is now officially Rugby Australia’s second domestic women’s competition.
