Rugby Canada To Bid To Host Rugby Sevens Series Once More

Rugby Canada has announced that it plans to bid yet again to host the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, from 2020 through 2024. Gareth Rees, director of program and commercial relations of Rugby Canada as well as co-chair of the HSBC Canada Sevens bid committee, said that the motivation behind Rugby Canada’s bid was one of having realised the ever-growing popularity of the global Sevens Series, one that was rising still.

Rees said that Rugby Canada was well aware of the popularity of the Sevens Series as well as of the fact that there was increased interest from all avenues to host one of the 10 stops on the world-wide tour.

He said that despite the popularity and obvious benefits that went along with hosting an event such as the Sevens Series, there were also many advantages to be had in terms of the general development of rugby as a sport in the country. In effect, the Sevens Series acted as a firm catalyst for the growth of rugby in Canada. Rees said that at the heart of the organisation was the desire to raise awareness of the sport, raise the general profile of rugby in Canada, stimulate participation in the sport in the country and drive the financial income that was necessary to support all Rugby Canada programming.

The Roaring Success

March 2016 saw the debut of the Sevens Series coming to Canada and since then, it has drawn extensively large audiences. The past two years has seen the tournament drawing in excess of 136,000 fans in a question of only four days of the competition. The figures were recently released to the press by Rugby Canada.

The bid to host was submitted to World Rugby at the end of February and the outcome of the decision is expected to be received before the arrival of the Canadian summer. World Rugby is the international governing body of rugby union.

Vancouver is but one city in a host of others currently acting as a stop on the Sevens Series calendar. Other host cities and countries participating through 2019 include Cape Town, Dubai, Sydney, Hamilton, New Zealand, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Paris, London and Singapore.

Rees said that Rugby Canada was highly conscious of the fact that there was a need for innovation and that nothing was being taken for granted.
