Cheika Delivers Unwanted Performance

November 22, 2017 by

England World Cup Quality

England 30, Australia 6.  No matter the mistakes, the opportunities missed, Aussie coach Michael Cheika’s fuming allegations regarding Australia’s disallowed tries; the score ultimately proves an important point: England is a World Cup contending side.

All things considered England may very well not even have been at their best, but this is certainly a result that inspires confidence and is enough to spur on a squad to do even better, achieve even greater results.

Joe Launchbury and late arrival replacement scrum-half Danny Care had much to do with the success of the day.  Care saw to a late jangle of tries sounding out across the field and scoreboard.  Despite his own points-accumulating performance, he also had a hand (or a kicking foot) in the tries of others.  Case in point being his hook-kick in the 72nd minute that opened up the field for Jonathan Joseph to make his mark at the touch down.

Joe Launchbury too, played a pivotal part in England’s success, laying the foundation for many of the points scored.  It’s not hard to see why Eddie Jones referred to Launchbury and Care as his finishers.  Finish they certainly did.

The result was the kind of reverberating outcome generally only used in sentences that also contains the words All Blacks.

Michael Cheika Investigated Over Comments

Wallabies head coach Michael Cheika has not exactly had as joyful a time of it as say, Eddie Jones.  The Aussie coach is now being investigated as a result of his outburst and comments after the match against England on Saturday.

Cheika reacted strongly and aggressively to a number of decisions that ultimately didn’t end up going Australia’s way in the 30-6 outcome at Twickenham on Saturday.  Captain Michael Hooper and full-back Kurtley Beale were awarded yellow cards already during the first half, leaving the Aussies in the lurch in many ways.  To add insult to injury, two tries were disallowed as a result of what was widely considered to be marginal calls against Australia.

Cheika may be in a spot of trouble following his outburst and remarks, but even former England centre Mike Tindall agrees that a number of the calls, against both sides, were very harsh.  He referred to Michael Hooper’s yellow card as being exceptionally severe and unforgiving, strongly implying that it had in fact been unfair.

Cheika lashed out in anger on a number of occasions as a result of referee Ben O’Keeffe and television official Simon McDowell’s decisions and is now facing the punch for it.
