Cheika vs. Rugby Australia at the RWC

October 28, 2019 by

Outgoing Wallabies Coach Michael Cheika and Raelene Castle, the Head of Rugby Australia, reportedly got involved in a fracas at the country’s Tokyo embassy during the Rugby team’s doomed Rugby World Cup Campaign. Cheika quit as coach on Sunday the 20th of October in the wake of the Wallabies’ defeat by the Lions in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals, with a final score of 40-16.

Reportedly the clash took place in front of dozens of guests while a World Cup function was being held at the Australian consulate in the Japanese capital. It’s further alleged that things got so heated that Qantas Wallabies legend Morgan Turinui was finally forced to intervene. Cheika was apparently livid that Castle had bypassed him to make sure that players turned up at the September 25 event, mere days before a crunch group game against Wales.

The whole team was initially asked to be at the event being held at the legation, but Cheika was holding out. The situation escalated as things were coming to a close, with the ex-coach speaking his mind when the CEO approached him to thank him for bringing four of his players along.

The Australian coach later went on to say that his relationship with CEO Castle was non-existent and that he further had almost no connection with chairperson Cameron Clyne.  The Wallabies’ former instructor then wrote an open letter to the team’s fans, thanking them all for their support and apologising for the squad’s dismal performance.
