Disappointment As Rugby World Cup Delayed

March 8, 2021 by

A message from Black Ferns team management sent out on Wednesday morning changed “everything”. So said Black Ferns leaders Kendra Cocksedge and Eloise Blackwell after learning of the disappointing news that the global tournament that would have been staged in New Zealand later this year, has been postponed until 2022.

The decision to postpone was taken after World Rugby had consulted on the matter with several of its global partners – including New Zealand Rugby and the government. And although the recommendation is yet to be considered and responded to by the World Ruby Executive Committee as well as the Rugby World Cup board, the postponement is reportedly already accepted by everyone as being a “done deal”.

According to Blackwell, the announcement was completely unexpected, and something of blindside that has hit everyone hard – including team management.

The September/October for 2021 would have been the first time a women’s World Cup would be played on Kiwi soil. The 12 competing teams would have played matches in Auckland and Whangarei between September 16 and October 16. But though players had remained hopeful all throughout that the competition would continue as planned this year, owing to the scrapping of the Six Nations tournament as well as several tournament qualifiers, the likelihood of a 2021 run was beginning to look increasingly unlikely.

But despite the incredible disappointment experienced by players and team management alike, both Blackwell and Cocksedge have said that they are still very keen to compete in the 2022 World Cup.
