England has named the squad that will be facing Australia for their World Cup quarter final, and have since dropped George Ford while selecting Owen Farrell as his replacement. Ford has started every game so far for the World Cup this year, and has been one of the country’s most impressive players. But coach Eddie Jones has left out the athlete for the biggest game so far since he joined the English side. Henry Slade will be coming in for Farrell, who has played centre for the World Cup, and will be partnering with Manu Tuilagi.
Mako and Billy Vunipola have been declared fit enough to start, while George Kruis has also been dropped to the bench with Courtney Lewis taking his place. Jones, talking about his decision, told reporters that Australia defends in a certain way, and that they believe these three players would be trouble to their defence, and that it will be a strong 10-12-13 combination. He added that they know that Australia is a high possession team, and that there is going to be a lot of defending in that area.
Despite the fat that Slade, Farrell, and Tuilagi have been used in combination before during this year’s Six Nations, it still represents a gamble for Jones, with Exeter not having participated for more than 40 minutes of a match since a serious knee injury in May. Ford has been a regular starter in previous years, and was a standout performer for the Six Nations.
