Israel Folau is still taking heat for his commentary as a staunch Christian on gay people.
In May 2019 he was expelled from the Rugby Australia fold after creating a social media post roundly denouncing adulterers, atheists, drunks, fornicators, homosexuals, idolaters, liars, and thieves. He warned that they will all soon be facing the fires of hell if they don’t repent their sinful ways and promptly got sacked for what was termed a high-level breach of the Player Code of Conduct. The New South Wales Anti-Discrimination Board justifiably ruled that Folau was vilifying gay people.
But it must be noted that Folau’s discriminatory beliefs have not impacted his ability to play Rugby.
He remains as the 4th-highest try-scorer in the history of the Wallabies but this didn’t help him hold on to his position in the team. Unfortunately, the backlash has done nothing to soften his views. In November 2019 he was filmed preaching a sermon in church on how the Australian bushfires were almost certainly linked to our nation’s views on abortion and buggery.
But the Catalans Dragons Rugby team don’t seem to mind his hateful views and he recently took to the field with his new team after his controversial signing in January this year. This move provided European Rugby to take him to task in a rather clever manner, with the Wigan Warriors declaring their 22 March clash against the Dragons Pride Day and revealing that their players will be clad in rainbow-coloured socks and shoelaces to honour the LGBTQ+ groups that will be invited to attend.
