When Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei during a startling announcement earlier this week revealed that it was in the process of cancelling its sponsorship contract with Aussie rugby league team Canberra Raiders, it at the same time effectively put an end to its oldest major sports sponsorship deal in the world.
Huawei on Monday revealed that the trade war between Australia and China was at the heart of the industry giant’s decision to put an end to the nine-year relationship.
Australia has for a few years now been prohibiting the Chinese smartphone giant from becoming involved in any crucial national communications endeavors or development of local telecommunications infrastructure. This has according to Jeremy Mitchells, who is Huawei Australia’s chief of corporate affairs, led to ongoing pressure being applied by China in terms of a reversal of Australian policy – not to mention even a largely negative business environment.
Even though the telecoms giant would according to Mitchell have enjoyed remaining in partnership for at least another nine or ten years, the prevailing situation has made it very difficult for any Chinese company to thrive in the Australian business environment.
The sponsorship was at the time of commencement, which dates as far back as 2011, viewed as an attempt on the part of Huawei to gain favour in the eyes of Australian lawmakers and senior politicians.
Though Mitchell said local government’s 2018 decision to effectively ban Huawei from the country’s 5G networks had had a major financial effect on the company, he also added that the telecommunications giant would be open to resume the sponsorship deal in the event that a more conducive local business environment were to become a possibility.
