Likely Cancellation for Autumn Rugby Tour

April 1, 2020 by

Raelene Castle ONZM, Chief Executive Officer of Rugby Australia, has warned that European tours scheduled for November 2020 may have to be cancelled if the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic shutdown gets extended. This move will have a huge impact on the four home unions, all of whom are about to agree to or have confirmed salary cuts in light of the massive fall in revenue.

After the governing body’s virtual annual meeting on Monday, March 30, Castle reported that Tests scheduled for this year and next may need reorganisation. She also said that the upcoming Tour matches we were due to host against Fiji and Ireland are not likely to proceed.

Rugby Australia reported a provisional loss of almost AU$10 million before a final audit and is currently engaged in talks with the Players’ Association about pay cuts. Castle has agreed to reduce her salary by 50% and other executives will be taking home 30% less of theirs.

The organisation’s finances were already reeling from the legal battle undertaken with Israel Folau, former fullback for the Wallabies, who got fired in 2019 after posting homophobic comments on social media. The case was settled out of court after an appeal.

Castle said that what happens in July will ultimately be up to whatever decision is made with World Rugby, but that right now it looks highly unlikely that the Tests will be going ahead. She added that the end-of-season European tour may well also be called off so that the end of the Super Rugby season can be scheduled, and the Rugby Championship played.
