Senior News Corp Executive and Former Ten Chief Hamish McLennan has just been appointed Chairman of Rugby Australia. In doing so he called on game supporters to have courage in this time of what he describes as unprecedented turbulence.
McLennan, who is also the Deputy Chair of the AU$92b Investment Management Group Magellan, is the third Chairman the Governing Body has had to appoint in less than three months. He takes over from his predecessor Cameron Clyne and the interim Chair Paul McLean.
McLennan has the unenviable task of taking charge of the game amidst a time of unparalleled agitation, with the shutdown in light of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic activating a huge financial crisis. It has spilt over into the political sector and even triggered talks of outright rebellion.
He said that now is the time for Rugby supporters to call on their fortitude because things will eventually return to normal and the game deserves this kind of attitude. He acknowledged that there’s been a distinct lack of alignment but insisted that there’s still a lot of good and this simply needs to be harnessed and pointed in the right direction.
While McLennan’s experience in the world of media suggests that he has a knowledge of the workings of different corporate cultures, there is a lack of involvement in sports governance that some are saying will count against him. His first move on Friday the 15th was to lend his support to Dave Rennie, the new coach for the Wallabies, who’s still in Scotland, awaiting international borders’ reopening.
