Melbourne Storm winger Josh Addo-Carr could be released from his contract at the end of the National Rugby League season in 2020, albeit conditionally. Chief Executive for the team Dave Donaghy stated in a recent letter that the club is looking at finding a way to let him go under compassionate grounds.
Thanks to a change in his familial circumstances, Addo-Carr is desperate to move back to Sydney, but he has two years left with the team. Donaghy said that if the Melbourne Storm can find a player of equal value they might be able to let him go.
Donaghy said that the fair value return of Addo-Carr could be a combination of things, including the price of a transfer fee or that of a player swap, with the athlete in question being one of equivalent standing. It could also be a salary cap relief for doing the right thing by the player and offering additional support for Addo-Carr, similarly to the recent situation in the Australian Football League with the Geelong Cats’ Tim Kelly.
The Chief Executive went on to say that the club believes that this will be the fairest outcome for everyone involved, in light of the significant investment they’ve made in Addo-Carr on the brink of the 2020 season. He said that most importantly, however, it would allow them to meet the player’s request and extend the necessary support as he makes the move back to Sydney with his family in tow.
