Broncos Thrash Bulldogs In Embarrassing Defeat

The Canterbury Bulldogs surely would have wanted to lift a leg and unleash a shower of revenge all over the enemy after receiving a thrashing from the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday, effectively bringing any hope that the Dogs may still have been nursing for the 2017 NRL season to a dead end.   Suncorp Stadium saw the Bulldogs defeated by an embarrassing 42 – 12.

The Dogs from Canterbury would have to win all six of their remaining games to stay in the running to reach the finals.  A feat of this magnitude certainly does not seem possible at this stage – not if the current shape of things is anything to go by.  The struggling Dogs will play Penrith Parramatta, the Souths, Manly, Gold Coast and St. George Illawarra before the end of the season.  It seems unlikely that they will win even one of the remaining matches – let alone all of them.

Canterbury Bulldogs forward Josh Jackson seemed downtrodden and even despondent when asked whether the pressure was now well and fully starting to mount, saying that it wasn’t ideal to be in this position so near the end of the season – and having to rely on the dim hope of future results to stay in the game.

Jackson went on to say that the defeat (or rather 11 defeats from a total of 18 games played) was not as a result of a lack of preparation, but rather unnecessary errors and on account of having to try too hard due to ever-mounting pressure of having to perform.

A Promising Start

The Dogs seemed to have play well under control during the first six minutes, with Marcelo Montoya scoring the maiden try early on.  6 Minutes of fame was all it was though – after which the Broncos unleashed a storm of fury on the Dogs, and ran rampant for the remainder of the game, scoring six consecutive tries and making it look like child’s play.

Kodi Nikorima, Josh McGuire and James Roberts all scored tries during the second half of the game.  Roberts’ try was nothing short of insult to injury – tearing through the Bulldogs’ lazy defence line and still having the time to run a cul-de-sac and plant the try on full-time.

The pressure is on – not only for the wailing Bulldogs but also for coach Des Hasler – with fans now urgently calling for his head.
