Melbourne Rebels assistant and former British & Irish Lions representative Geoff Parling has been named the newest Wallabies forwards coach. This following the withdrawal from the race by Brumbies coach Dan McKellar.
McKellar has reportedly explained his decision to withdraw from the race to be named the next Wallabies forwards coach as that of his wanting instead to remain in Australia’s capital in order to work alongside the Brumbies’ new attack coach.
Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has in the meantime made no attempt to hide his disappointment over McKellar’s refusal to accept the role, saying that since he regarded the Brumbies coach to be a coach beyond his own time (referring to himself), the idea was to involve McKellar with the team in such a way that he would be ready to step into a larger role post the 2024 Rugby World Cup.
But despite his disappointment over having lost out on McKellar, Rennie said he believed Parling to be a good choice for the job at hand. The need is for a coach with both the correct set of skills as well as an intimate knowledge of the players, said Rennie, which is why Geoff Parling has to been asked to join in. A respected coach among players, Rennie said Parling is the “obvious choice”.
Parling now gets to join Rennie’s new scrum coach Petrus du Plessis as the Wallabies prepare to travel to New Zealand in the run-up to two Bledisloe Cup matches scheduled to be played in Wellington and Auckland in mid-October.
