Richmond Model May Save Championship Rugby

April 20, 2020 by

Richmond Rugby Club has no full-time players, a model which it may serve Australian Rugby well to emulate in these uncertain times. While the Club has won promotion, it has no intention of changing its ethos or its pay structure.

Does Richmond Rugby Club’s return to the Championship count as a sign for things to come as AR enters one of the most challenging periods its ever had to go through?

It holds no players to contract and has its priority its organisation, one in which everyone has a role to play rather than all energies being focused on the first time alone. The last time they got promoted to English Rugby’s second tier was three years ago, but it looks like their example is gaining ground as the financial impact of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown continues to resound across the globe.

Steve Hill, Director of Rugby at Richmond for the last decade and Head Coach for the first team, said that Championship finances simply do not work, adding that the cuts it’s having to deal with made by the Rugby Football Union will no doubt see more associations looking to their prototype.

Hill said that outside of the Ealing Trailfinders team, virtually every single Club is losing money and it can’t keep going on like this. The last thing anyone wants is these associations disappearing completely and that is exactly where the world is heading if we don’t change things.

He says that he is of the firm belief that the structure of Rugby beneath the Premiership level needs to be reset.
