He’s a powerful player in the Australian advertising scene and John Singleton has just announced that his five key rule changes could also utterly revolutionise Rugby Union and help to get more bums on seats. It’s been said that the Rugby world is in dire need of an advertising guru like Singleton, someone who can his cachet, charisma, and contacts to help transform the code.
His ideas are quite out there, but who knows? They just might work, and they’ll certainly spice up the game for die-hard fans!
His first change would be that 1 point should be given for a penalty goal, but 3 points should be awarded for a goal kicked because of a penalty given for foul play. His second alteration would be that conversion and field goals would be worth 2 points each and tries would get 7 points awarded to the team. His third modification would trim technical reasons for why penalties can be handed out for breaches of lineouts, mauls, scrums, and rucks to just 9. This would eliminate all the outmoded rules handed to us by lawyers and such which serve to break up the pace of play, according to Singleton.
His fourth change would make kicking out on the full in general play illegal, and his fifth that squads would only have 5 phases of the ball to gain ground. If they fail to manage this, they have to sacrifice possession, but if it makes what Rex Mossop calls Forward Progress then the team can hold the ball indefinitely.
