Rugby Union Six Nations: Scotland 32 – 26 France
No sooner had Scotland celebrated their first Six Nations victory following the match against France on February 11th, or two out of two losers France managed to get themselves in hot water with French rugby authorities, this time about more than just poor playing tactics.
The French Rugby Federation said on Monday that it had decided to sanction a number of players following questioning of certain players by Edinburgh City Police authorities following a report involving an incident of sexual assault.
The sanctioned players will not be included in the squad about to play Italy on February 23rd in Marseille. The names of the players involved in the incident have not been made public, but it has been announced that Alexandre Lapandry, Arthur Iturria, Sekou Macalou, Anthony Belleau, Félix Lambey, Jonathan Danty, Rémi Lamerat, Louis Picamoles and Teddy Thomas will not be joining the rest of the squad on the field come game day.
France has now lost both of their first games. The first one was a 15-13 defeat against Ireland in Paris.
Women’s Six Nations: Ireland 21 – 8 Italy
Both Ireland and Italy approached the match with equal resolve after having lost to France and England, respectively. Ireland lost 24-0 to France in their opener in Toulouse, with Italy not having fared much better in their 42-7 brawl against England.
Ireland suffered an early setback when Alison Miller had to receive on-field treatment following a suspected fracture to the ankle and had to be carried from the game on a stretcher. In fact, the entire first half was plagued by stoppages as a result of injuries.
During the second half, Ireland really got stuck in, dominating the field but seemingly unable to convert their territorial rule into scorable points. Lindsay Peat prepped the field for a try by Griffen during the 67th minute when she gained substantial ground following a strong Ireland scrum.
A third try was soon in the making after the second one, with the field once again prepped by the squad for Griffen to land her second try of the match.
Eleonora Ricci saved some face for Italy during the final minutes of the match by pushing on and over the line, but it was case of too little, too late for Italy, who are still without a point as they prepare to face France on February 24th.
