Fijian winger Suliasi Vunivalu has left Melbourne Storm to sign on with the Australian Wallabies has he crosses to rugby union for 2021. Now that Israel Folau is lost to the 15-man code, Vunivalu will provide a similar aerial threat along with running power, with the 92cm winger being one of the NRL’s most dangerous players when running defence or under a high ball. It’s been confirmed that Vunivalu will be contracted with the Storm in 2020, and similarly to Marika Koroibete and Cooper Cronk, he will be playing out the season knowing that it will be his last for the NRL.
After it had been discovered that the player had no signed an extension, reports surfaced that Rugby Australia had been keeping an eye on him, and after playing some time in union, the winger was given the chance to explore the former sport and potentially player for the 2024 Rugby World Cup.
The winger has signed a two-year contract to play with the Wallabies, along with the Queensland Reds starting in the year 2021. Talking about the new deal, the player said that the Storm had been good to him, and that he is continuing to make fond memories with them. He added that he offer from rugby union was too good for him to turn down, especially considering that he has a new family that he wants to provide for. Chief executive of Storm Dave Donaghy said they simply couldn’t match the Wallabies’ offer.
