Christ Tindall, the manager of New Zealand’s Chiefs has recently stated that a partnership between the Chiefs and the Hong Kong Rugby Union could eventually see a Hong Kong player in Super Rugby.
A development team led by the Chiefs are on their annual tour once again, and four of their players have been relocated to Hong Kong. Tindall has told reports that, “It’s quite possible that it’s part of the vision for the partnership to have a Hong Kong-connected player play for the Chiefs. There is a real progression in Hong Kong rugby and we have seen that on the field, particularly in the last two years. We are trying to help Hong Kong get ready for their big World Cup qualifiers coming up.”
He added further, “It’s a huge development opportunity for us in terms of our young men that we bring on this tour. For many, it’s their first full-time rugby experience.
“It’s exciting to see a Super Rugby game coming to Hong Kong this year, hopefully that sparks motivation for another game and we would love for the Chiefs to play in Hong Kong,” he said.
The Chiefs and Hong Kong have been in training together for the past few weeks, and will be set to play a match at the Hong Kong Football Club at a later date. It’s a major part of the Asia Rugby Championships, as Hong Kong are this year’s host, where Japan and Malaysia are also taking part.
