Wallabies Fighting Fit For Argentina

No Major Changes Ahead Of Argentina

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika isn’t expected to make any changes to the squad set to take on Argentina on October 8th at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza.  This includes Fiji player Marika Koroibete.  Cheika first took Koroibete on tour during Spring of last year – again selecting him to play in June of this year as well as including him in the Rugby Championship side.

The initial stand-off with Argentina marked his debut in test rugby and after his stellar performance in Bloemfontein against the Springboks, it would have been folly not to include him in the squad for the second go against Argentina.

Koroibete had been hanging in the shadows for much longer than usual – with many players becoming deterred as a result of a lengthy wait.  Koroibete says that the secret to his success was knowing that he had to earn his spot to play for a side like the Wallabies – and that patience and waiting was just another obstacle to beat.

Drawing On Past Lessons

Cheika will no doubt be looking to draw valuable information from the recent clash with the Boks in Bloemfontein when headed to Argentina – one which ended in yet another draw.  Despite a lot of tongue-wagging concerning the fairness of the referee as well as a number of botched passes, the Australians still only have themselves to blame for the outcome.  There were no less than 4 chances wasted which easily could have resulted in more points having been scored by Australia.

The Will Genia break immediately comes to mind.  What should have resulted in a Michael Hooper try ended with a Springbok 22 drop out instead.  And who can forget the botched kick for touch during the first half which could have seen the Wallabies aiming for the posts for 3 additional points?  Any one of these would have prevented yet another stalemate.

The Wallabies will no doubt be intensifying the focus on fitness, after almost having been run off their feet by the South Africans.  The Boks nearly managed this – with 59% of the ball having been played by them.  Let it not be said that the Wallabies had not paid attention to fitness talks back in June as well as the days leading up to the match – as they certainly managed to put in the yards nonetheless.

Bernard Foley has proved masterful in converting unstructured play into opportunity for tries – with both of Koroibete’s tries having been the fruit of Foley’s labour.  The duo will no doubt be looking to extend their prowess to the match against Argentina.
