Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, has announced to the public that the 2020 Champions League Final game will be hosted at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul.
The stadium is no stranger to the Champions League, and hosted one of the series’ most famous games in 2005, when Liverpool made a comeback against their opponents AC Milan.
Along with the news, it has also been revealed that the women’s Champion League final will be hosted by Vienna, and the 2020 Europa League final will be played in Gdansk, Poland.
Part of the reason for the choice to play in Istanbul is due to the mounting pressure that UEFA has received in recent weeks to ensure that future games are hosted in cities that have proper infrastructure. The current game set to be played in Kiev has caused outcry among fans of Liverpool, saying that the city doesn’t have the infrastructure to host such a large influx of people.
The UEFA President has made sure that there is now a specific selection process in place for the cities that can host the Champions League. The choice for Kiev was made before Ceferin was elected into his current position in 2016.
For the next season, the final will be hosted by the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium, capable of holding up to 67000 people at once, UEFA has announced.
Due to the growing complexities of hosting the League final, some have suggested that the event be held outside of cities in Europe in the future.
