Arsenal has beaten Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium and has advanced above their north London rivals Tottenham as well as Manchester United to take the spot as third in the Premier League. Aaron Ramsey, who proved to be the deciding factor in the match, had an earlier effort disallowed after he claimed a foul, but he managed to put the hosting team ahead of their opponents with a low strike from 15 yards out.
Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie put on a dividing header on the goal line as he managed to deny Alexandre Lacazette, but the French player still doubled the lead that Arsenal had accumulated later into the game when he pushed struck the ball over goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Newcastle’s best chance at beating their host team fell short after Salomon Rondon’s low show was pushed wide by Arsenal’s Bernd Leno.
Arsenal started February ten points behind Tottenham, but their latest victory has taken the Gunners two points ahead of the Spurs – currently sitting at fourth place – as well as United in fifth, with a total of seven League games remaining. This also marked the 10th league victory in succession for Arsenal, which is their best run since December 1997 to May 1998 as Unai Emery’s squad continued a slid second half of the season that may see them seal a return to the Champions League after a two-year long absence. It was also the lowest score count for a Premier League game since Bournemouth fought Leicester.
