Arsenal Secures Carabao Cup Final

Arsenal has done what few would have guessed and many hoped, beating Chelsea 2-1 in London and thereby securing a Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. The Gunners came all the way from behind to secure the victory against Chelsea, with Arsene Wenger crediting their clarity of play to the transfer of Alexis Sanchez. Transfer away, just to be clear.

The victory comes just two days after the transfer of Sanchez to Manchester United was completed. in return, Arsenal got Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Not a bad swop by any count.

Not The Best Six Months In Arsenal’s History

Arsenal had not been having the best time of it. In fact, it’s been a completely miserable six months leading up to the match against Chelsea. They dropped to 23 points behind leaders Manchester City into a dismal sixth place in the Premier League. Then, as if that had not been insult or injury enough, they lost to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

Which is why the victory over Chelsea has been a vital one. Not only does it put them in the running for their fourth trophy in five years, but it also sets them well on their way to secure the only domestic competition that Wenger has not yet won.  This after his 21 years at Arsenal.

According to Wenger, nothing takes its toll on a team like uncertainty. The 68 year old was referring to the loss of Alexis Sanchez. The time leading up to Sanchez’ transfer has been a trying one, mired by a lot of uncertainty. Now that it was finally over and done with, the team was able to move on and focus on playing instead of cat-footing it out in the dressing rooms.

Wenger has ascribed a lot of the misery that played itself out over the last couple of months to dressing room uncertainty. He said that fans, and possibly even the press, did not realise just how much transfer tension affected players. Players who had to interact with each other and perform as a team whilst having to withhold information about the future from each other. It’s certainly not a situation that inspires confidence or trust. This almost always shows on the field, as trust and confidence are two very important aspects of teamwork.

Arsenal bids for a win in the final of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 1993. They will meet Manchester City at Wembley on February 25th.
