Austria beat Northern Ireland to move on the Nations League Group B3, while Northern Ireland are now at the bottom without a point after their match played in Vienna.
It was a slow first half for the teams, but a more action-packed second half saw Marko Arnautovic score the winning goal for his team at the 71st minute. Will Grigg came close to equalising the score just 13 minutes later, but his header was rebounded off of the far post, and adding to the team’s failure to score in their last 5 away games.
The first half of the match saw a number of chances go by for both teams, but the most memorable moment was Bailey Peacock-Farrell picking up a back pass from Jonny Evans, with the referee awarding Austria a free kick not long after. Arnautovic’s attempt was cancelled out by John Magennis.
The second half saw both teams trying harder, starting with Peacock-Farrell being forced into two saves. Arnautovic attempted a second strike, but the Leeds goalkeeper blocked him once again. The 71st minute proved the turning point for Austria as their captain made the final dart through the opposition and claimed the winning goal.
Austria is now in second place for the Nations League Group B3, just behind Herzegovina and Bosnia. The team has won seven of their last eight games at home, having lost only to Brazil (0-3) earlier this year in June, while Northern Ireland has won just two of their last ten.
