Barcelona Beat Levante 4-2 in Copa del Rey

January 21, 2019 by

Two goals claimed by Ousmane Dembele during the first half of the match put Barcelona, who have won the cup for the last four seasons, ahead of the aggregate in a game played at the Nou Camp for the 2019 Copa del Rey. Lionel Messi earned another in a third, which marks his seventh goal in the last five games. However, the team could still be removed from the competition thanks to claims they fielded an ineligible player for the first leg of the game.

Levante have announced that they intend to lodge a complaint to the Spanish federation due to Barcelona defender Juan Brandariz, who should have been serving his suspension following a yellow card he received while playing for Barcelona’s B Team in the Segunda B division.

Barcelona have defended their decision, citing that a rule change din November last year meant that the suspension does not apply to the current Copa del Rey, and that Brandariz was legally allowed to be put on the field. Real Madrid was expelled from the competition in 2015 after they fielded Denis Cheryshev when he was ineligible.

Barcelona remained in control for the second leg against their opponents despite the fact that they may be forced to leave for the first time in nine years. Messi had a chance to save while Barcelona took the lead, just as Erick Cabaco’s clearance hit Dembele’s shin and went over the head of goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez.
