Socceroos Skipper Pulls A Rabbit From The Hat (Trick)
The Socceroos have qualified for their fourth successive Soccer World Cup. The action went down at the Stadium Australia in Sydney in front of 76,080 hopeful and extremely excited soccer fans. The final score: 3-1 against a very physical Honduras side.
The atmosphere was thick, tangible and tense as Australia initially struggled to get the ball rolling. In the right direction, in any event. For the longest time it seemed as if it was going to be a goalless game for Australia. Until the 53rd minute, when captain and saving grace Mile Jedinak’s foot made for a decisive goal to break the looming curse.
A relieved and elated Mark Millgan spoke to the press after the match, saying that the Socceroos had been facing up to a lot lately, from game strategy and the way they really wanted to play, to not qualifying automatically to a tough stand-off against Syria. The general idea was that the group had been through a lot of turmoil and deserved the break.
Australia are the 31st team to have booked their spot in the 2018 Soccer World Cup. There are only 32 spots available in total, with Peru and New Zealand set to battle it out for the last available one.
The Journey Up Until Now
It was all Mile Jedinak’s show from start to end. And no better way to be returning from a 5-month injury absence than a second-half hat trick and a World Cup dream.
The initial kick was a free and deflected one but the second and third were firmly placed in the bottom left hand corner and smack bang in the centre. The third and final goal was scored with a mere five minutes to go, sending the crowd into a wild frenzy.
Honduras scored their one and only goal with seconds to spare before full-time. Saving the visitors from absolute embarrassment but doing nothing to dampen the spirits of the Australian side and their cheering fans.
The 2018 World Cup journey has been an epic one. The team played 22 games in the scope of 884 days and travelled more than 250,000 kilometres to 22 different countries in order to keep the dream alive.
That having been said and done, Postecoglou’s future is still very much in the balance and the verdict is out as to whether he will be the one boarding the flight to Russia with the team come 2018.
